The transmission occurs through contact with urine from the host animal.

Confirming the diagnosis during the first to second weeks after exposure can be achieved through culturing blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid. Another common diagnostic approach is the serological detection of anti-L. interrogans antibodies.
